Mothering Sunday

Traditionally on this day young girls in service were given time off to go home, and families went back to their Mother Church, to the place where they were nurtured, loved and formed in the ways of God. Today, of course, we still celebrate Mother’s Day, a day to thank and remember all those who have mothered us in all the ways we can be cared for. It is usually a day of celebration, when we come together with family and loved ones. But this Mothering Sunday will be a strange one as we struggle across the world to keep our lives going, keep people safe, and yet celebrate, if at a distance, our relationships and the kindness we receive from others.

On the Saturday before Mothering Sunday, a team of four spent the afternoon making up 104 posies, which were delivered the following day all around the parish, a gift from their Mother  Church.

Each posy was accompanied by a prayer card –

This posy comes with love from your Mother Church, along with a prayer for this special day.

Creator God

As a mother loves her children so you love us. You call us as your children to show your love in our homes and communities, so they may be places of security and trust.

Bless today all parents and any who care for children, strengthen those families living under stress, and may your love be known where no human love is found.

We thank you for the family of our church, we pray that all may find in her a true home, a place of love and welcome, given in the name of Jesus Christ.

Amen
