Burneside Brass Band raises the roof at St Paul’s
On Sunday, 24th November, we were delighted to welcome a return visit by Burneside Brass Band. We had been warned the previous evening that the concert might have to be cancelled because some of the band members were marooned by flooded roads, but thankfully the waters subsided overnight. The church was filled and the 32 members + two percussionists raised the roof with a varied programme of brass band music. The first half featured more traditional numbers, while the second moved us into the Christmas season some some well-known and some new pieces. It was lovely to see the number of young members in the band, including a visitor from the Royal Northern College of Music.
In her introduction Penny explained the origin of our link with this Band. Two members – Dave Higson
(conductor) and Eleanor Knowles (euphonium) – had emailed 2022 asking if they could visit and play in
St Paul’s as part of their ‘Brass duets in Churches Expedition’ as they were attempting to play in all the
parish churches of Cumbria. Eleanor wrote an account of each visit, and has created a web page on
Facebook https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100092218187739
The band also features in the annual summer programme of concerts in the bandstand in Grange. We hope that St Paul’s may also become an annual spot in their calendar.
